Southern stand named after František Plánička

PRAGUE/EDEN ARENA – The Southern stand of Eden Arena was named in honour of legendary Slavia and Czechoslovak goalkeeper František Plánička. The ceremony was part of the 125th anniversary of the club before the Europa League game with Villarreal.
The new naming of the Southern stand was revealed in the presence of Slavia management, Mrs Dana Lukešová – daughter of František Plánička – and grandchildren of the legendary goalkeeper.

František Plánička (1904-1996) spent whole his career in Slavia Prague and was one of the most honoured players in the history of Czechoslovak football. Between 1923 and 1938 he played 196 games for Slavia winning the Czeechoslovak league eight times and the Mitropa Cup once. He was also captain of Czechoslovak national team during the World Cups 1934 and 1938. In 1934 his team finished second after losing 1-2 to Italy.

Plánička has always been characterized by his sportsmanship. He was never cautioned or sent off during his career. In 1985 he was awarded the UNESCO International Fair Play Award. In 1999 he was recognised as the best Czech goalkeeper of the 20th century by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics and also one of the 10 best goalkeepers of the World.
